Space Architecture
The compact program “Space Architecture” is a perfect environment to deliver modern knowledge and know-how in an exclusive research field. Participants will be trained by an international team of experts, scientists, and entrepreneurs to come up with innovative solutions and futuristic models regarding human space travel and habitats off Earth. Materials, resources and recycling resources will be a major topic in this 15-day program.
Programme language: English
The space sector has historically played a role in many non-space industries such as transportation, pharmaceuticals, finance, energy and mining to name a few. Similarly, the experiences of living and working in space and the vision of future research stations on the moon and Mars are goals that open up many possibilities on Earth. Space architecture encompasses the theory and practice of designing for and building in extraterrestrial and extreme terrestrial environments. It is a relatively new but rapidly growing field of research and work.
The specialization of this MBA Space Architecture: Life in Space on Earth is divided into three modules and spans an arc between economics, engineering and other technical and social sciences, into space and back to Earth. Each module deals with a current overarching topic that is illuminated, critically reflected and discussed in a transdisciplinary manner by experts from the space sector and the respective subject area.
What & how you will learn
The Big Picture: Differences, Commons and Synergies | 5 days
In the first module ‘The Big Picture: Differences, Commons and Synergies’ (5 days) the systemic relationship and the interaction of humans with the habitat (terrestrial and extra-terrestrial) and the respective technical solutions are examined. Expertise on the current state of the art and research is conveyed, and new knowledge is initiated through the synergy effects of the interdisciplinary discussion.
Topics that are discussed from a terrestrial and extra-terrestrial perspective: Environmental factors and their implications and consequences for planning, design, building and living; the Human Aspect of living in an extreme environment; Technological solutions as case studies; Technological solutions and environmental and economic drivers; Strategies and Examples from past, current and future projects.
Informal fireside chats with leaders in the field complement this module.
Making most of what we have: Resources and Cycles | 5 days
The second module ‘Making most of what we have: Resources and Cycles’ (5 days) is dedicated to the major topic of resources and cycles. Sustainable approaches, circular systems and optimization strategies are seen as a prerequisite for the long-term sustainability of any economy, regardless of whether we are considering living in space or on Earth. In this module, you will learn from leading experts in the field – from space and Earth. Together we will discuss and compare different approaches and look for synergies from both metabolic systems as well as new ideas.
The topics include: Principles of circular systems and sustainability in Space and on Earth (Regenerative Life Support Systems, Food Production, Recovery and Regeneration of Water, Waste Management, etc.); Technologies and Applications; Strategies for resource scarcity, supply problems and end-of-life management. Informal fireside chats with leaders in the field complement this module.
Innovating the Future | 5 days
The third module ‘Innovating the Future’ (5 days) looks far into the future and conveys different strategies and approaches. Many systems in space weigh less, require less energy and resources, and are more efficient and often more reliable than similar systems on Earth. In this module, you will learn from experiences in extreme environments and benefit from the strategies to deal with their limitations. Informal fireside chats with leaders in the field complement this module.
Operations & Supply Chain Management
Here our participants will be taught at the renowned Caltech University in Pasadena, USA. In this 13-day tech programme, students will be trained by international experts and professionals in courses like Process & Quality Management, Logistics, Sustainability as well as Accounting & Finance at the Californian campus. On top, the Caltech Team also offers site visits, tours, dinners and fireside chats with professors in California.

Global Supply Chain Management
FEM of Manufacturing & Distribution Enterprise
This program presents an economic model that can be used to evaluate all strategic and tactical activities in manufacturing and distribution companies. We call it the Fundamental Economic Model, or FEM for short. The model encourages participants to contemplate what REALLY creates valuation enhancement, irrespective of traditional accounting and performance metrics. The model evaluates closely how cash flows drive enterprise growth and shareholder values. It also looks equally closely at how tangible and intangible assets are utilized in support of value-enhancing strategies and tactics.
Participants will learn how to differentiate between a value proposition with customers and the value propositions that all companies have with their shareholders. With this understanding, participants will be exposed to the Cash Flow Return on Investment (CFROI) formula, and it is simpler to calculate the Cash Flow/Gross Assets variant formula. Using these formulas, participants will learn how to recast their companies’ P&L’s and Balance Sheets into true economic statements that more accurately depict the origins of value.
Effective Materials Management
Global Sourcing & Supplier Management
Today’s progressive purchasing organization has transformed into a global sourcing operation that seeks out the best suppliers from around the globe. This new breed of purchasing develops partnerships with suppliers and takes a PROACTIVE role in matching supplier capabilities with factory requirements at the lowest TOTAL cost. Driving down purchase prices is now combined with requirements to establish smooth flows of materials into the factory and a constant questioning of how a supplier relationship can be improved. Ultimately, satisfying these concerns leads to improvements in gross margins, cash flows and shareholder value.
This workshop provides participants with a framework for developing a successful Global Sourcing Strategy. Day 1 is devoted to teaching the basics of procurement operations, including the roles and responsibilities of each member of the sourcing and supplier management team. Group exercises are used to reinforce training points and provide relevance to participants.
